The first pillar of The Flivver Way states: We are Involved. What does it mean to be involved? Why does extracurricular involvement in school matter? Aren't academics enough? Won't balancing extracurricular activities negatively affect a student's academics?
It is Mrs. Sutton and Mr. Wedge's hope that the information in this first issue of the 2023-2024 KHS Counselor's Corner can address questions you may have about how extracurricular involvement is connected to academic success and positive well-being.
First, let us define what an extracurricular activity is. Essentially, an extracurricular activity is a club, sport, organization, or service group for students that is connected to the school or local community. At KHS, students can participate in extracurriculars that involve academics, athletics, service, hobbies, career, fellowship, among others. Students can participate in one or many extracurriculars, but it is highly encouraged that all Flivvers participate in something beyond their seven assigned class periods.
From Drama Club to E-Sports, and Quiz Bowl to Varsity Soccer, there truly is something for everyone at KHS. We encourage students to pay attention to school announcements, read the posters in the hallways, and ASK QUESTIONS to find the information they are seeking about extracurriculars at KHS. There is a list of extracurriculars on the KHS website, as well. Students, if you don't see an extracurricular activity that sparks your interest, we encourage you to see your designated school counselor about a path to create one that will spark your interest (and likely others', as well). Some of our greatest additions to KHS's extensive extracurricular list have come about because students saw a need and acted to create an extracurricular that addressed that need. Students are also encouraged to explore opportunities for extracurricular involvement throughout the local community. It all counts and it all matters. Students, we cannot express enough the value of extracurricular involvement. Your success just might depend on it.
Extracurricular involvement in school has a positive impact on students in several ways. In the Honor Society's article, "The Role of Extracurricular Activities, Clubs, and Societies in Fostering Academic Success and Personal Development, the authors state, "Research shows a positive correlation between participation in extracurricular activities and academic performance. Students involved in these activities often show improved grades, higher educational aspirations, increased college enrollment, and reduced absenteeism.
The Honor Society explains that, "Extracurricular activities contribute significantly to personal development, fostering essential life skills and enhancing students' overall well-being.

- Improved Grades: Participating in extracurricular activities often enhances academic performance. It offers students practical skills such as time management, problem-solving, and critical thinking, which are transferable to their academic work.
- Higher Educational Aspirations: Students who participate in extracurricular activities often have greater educational aspirations. These activities provide exposure to new interests and possibilities, which can inspire students to aim higher in their academic pursuits.
- Increased College Enrollment: There is a proven correlation between participation in extracurricular activities and college enrollment rates. The skills, experiences, and relationships gained through these activities can enhance students' applications and increase their chances of securing admission to higher education institutions.
- Reduced Absenteeism: Participation in extracurricular activities can result in lower rates of school absenteeism. Students who are engaged in school activities beyond the classroom tend to be more motivated to attend school regularly."
The Honor Society explains that, "Extracurricular activities contribute significantly to personal development, fostering essential life skills and enhancing students' overall well-being.
- Life Skills: These activities can develop skills such as leadership, teamwork, time management, problem-solving, and resilience. Students learn to navigate complex group dynamics, coordinate tasks, and balance different commitments, thereby enhancing their life skills.
- Social and Emotional Development: By providing opportunities for interaction and collaboration, extracurricular activities can contribute to students' social and emotional development. Students learn to form relationships, express themselves, handle different perspectives, and manage conflicts.
- Well-being and Mental Health: Participating in extracurricular activities can promote students' mental health and overall well-being. These activities offer a healthy outlet for stress and a sense of belonging, which can enhance students' mental health."
